About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

Let’s be honest — they don't give you many creative options out of law school, other than working at a law firm. What other options are out there for lawyers and what career paths can a law degree lead you to?

Whether it's becoming an entrepreneur, going in-house, or coming back to the law firm, join us for a candid panel discussion on the many directions a legal career can take.

Featuring three brave souls who took the scenic route:

  • Chang Han – Lead Entrepreneur in Residence, Innovation UBC

Chang Han is the Lead Entrepreneur in Residence at entrepreneurship@UBC, where he leads a team supporting early-stage startups across diverse sectors as they grow and scale. He also serves as Executive in Residence for Intellectual Property at AccelerateIP, part of a national $90 million initiative, and teaches innovation, strategy, and entrepreneurship at BCIT. With a background in law, startup leadership, and investment, Chang brings deep expertise to guiding ventures through early growth, IP strategy, and business development.

  • Claire Sung – Partner, McCarthy Tetrault

Claire is a partner in the Business Law Group at McCarthy Tétrault, where she delivers strategic counsel on a wide range of transactional matters including corporate finance and M&A, as well as corporate governance and securities regulatory compliance. Claire’s perspective is shaped by her time in-house at a global chemicals leader dual-listed on the TSX and Nasdaq with operations in all major markets. While in-house, she was a member of the Corporate Crisis Management Team and was responsible for the company’s global legal compliance program and legal operations across the US, China, Egypt, Trinidad and Tobago and New Zealand. Claire’s multifaceted experiences, complemented by her cross-cultural agility, uniquely position her to fully appreciate the various demands placed on clients and partner with them to successfully navigate the rapidly evolving local, regional and international market dynamics and regulatory landscape.

  • Yong-Jae Kim – Associate General Counsel, Doman Building Materials Group

Yong-Jae Kim is Associate General Counsel at Doman Building Materials Group and formerly served as General Counsel at Uranium Energy Corp. and Silvercorp Metals Inc., bringing over 20 years of experience in the mining and natural resources sectors. He has advised boards and executive teams on corporate strategy, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder engagement, while also maintaining deep involvement in day-to-day operations. Yong-Jae previously practiced as a partner at Gowling WLG (Canada) LLP, focusing on corporate finance and commercial law in the mining industry.

The panel will be moderated by Hans Chang, Director of Business Development and Marketing at Lawson Lundell.
